I was really lucky that I was introduced to yoga and trained at a studio that didn t glorify teachers. There was no schedule, so you couldn t follow a teacher even if you wanted to. They drilled into us that it wasn t about the teacher. Constantly saying, "you re your own best teacher," over and over as I rolled my eyes and didn t *really* understand what they meant.
I was reminded of all this when my friend and new teacher @sonshineyoga
called me the other day after teacher a big class in New Orleans. She asked me if I noticed how people look at me after class. And I laughed. Yes. I do. Greg always points out that people look at me with this twinkle of love in their eyes after practice. And it is ever so tempting to think that it s because I m a miraculous teacher, but while that may or may not be true, they re looking at me like that because I was with them while they accessed something special within themselves. I was with them while they struggled. I was with them when they overcame said struggle (hopefully). I was with them while it all calmed down and came together in savasana. I was with them when they saw themselves clearer and were reminded of their greatness. But my presence was not necessary. It might have helped. But it wasn t the feeling they had. .
You re the reason you feel anything and everything. Don t give that power to a teacher. Or a class. Or a song. Or a yoga pose. You re the reason and don t you forget it. .
